After thirty, life stops holding still. Careers move and people move with them, and the friends you once saw every week are suddenly in another city on another schedule. Getting four women around one table starts to take a month of messages, and most months it quietly doesn't happen.
So things get postponed. The tennis you keep meaning to start, the class you talked about all winter, the trip everyone agreed to in January. And if you have just landed in a new city or a new country, there is nothing to postpone yet: you are starting from nobody at all.
Isil came to Lille as an expat and built a life here from scratch. Céline is French and watched her own circle thin out as everyone got busier. Two versions of the same problem, so they made the thing they had both been waiting for: a club where the sport, the dinner and the weekend are already in the diary, and all you have to do is take a seat.

€15 a month while we are new, €20 after that. It buys invitations to the members-only evenings, meet-ups, cocktail nights and the run club, and it lets you book each month a week before anyone else. Turn up often enough and the faces start repeating. That is usually how the friends happen. Activities are paid for separately.
